SAT vs ACT: which should my child take?

Opening answer

Colleges accept the SAT and the ACT equally, so the right test is the one where your child scores higher as a percentile. We settle it with data, not guesswork: every family starts with a free mock SAT and a free mock ACT, we compare the two percentiles, and we prepare for the test that came out ahead. If the two are close, we pick the one the student found more comfortable, because comfort shows up on test day.

How the two tests differ in 2026

The SAT is taken on a computer, runs 2 hours and 14 minutes, and has 98 questions. It adapts to the student: the second module of each section is harder or easier depending on the first. A calculator is allowed on every math question, and the test includes a built-in graphing calculator. Scores run from 400 to 1600.

The ACT runs 2 hours and 5 minutes for English, math and reading, with 131 questions. Science is now an optional 40-minute add-on and does not affect the Composite score, which is the average of the three core sections on a 1 to 36 scale. The ACT gives less time per question, so students who read quickly and work steadily tend to favor it. Students who like more time to think tend to favor the SAT.

A few things that do not matter

Neither test is "easier" for everyone. Neither test is preferred by colleges. A college that reads scores reads both. A few colleges have said they want the ACT science score, so we check your child's college list before deciding whether to add it.

How we prepare, whichever test it is

Plan on 6 to 12 weeks before the first official test date. Most of our students meet with an instructor once a week for two hours and do two to three hours of homework in between, with full-length practice tests along the way. Prepare for the whole test, not one section at a time, so the score a college sees is balanced. Our results by starting score are on our results page.
