Does Yale require the SAT or ACT?

Yes, Yale requires an SAT or ACT score from first-year and transfer applicants. Yale's admissions page puts it plainly: "First-year and transfer applicants must include scores from the ACT or SAT when applying."

No, Yale is not test-optional for the 2026-2027 cycle. This rule covers high school seniors in the 2026-27 school year, who apply this cycle and start college in fall 2027. Starting with the 2026-2027 cycle, the score must come from the SAT or the ACT.

Either test meets the requirement. We tell families to pick the test that fits their child best and put real effort into it.

What SAT score do enrolled first-years at Yale have?

The middle half of enrolled first-years who sent an SAT scored between 1500 and 1580. These are students who actually enrolled in the fall 2023 class and chose to send an SAT.

This range is not a floor. Some enrolled students scored below 1500, and some scored above 1580. The band simply shows where the middle of the group landed.

When our students aim for Yale, we read 1500 as the low end of that middle group and 1580 as the high end. A practice score near the top of that range tells us a student is in strong shape on testing.

What ACT score do enrolled first-years at Yale have?

The middle half of enrolled first-years who sent an ACT scored between 33 and 35. Like the SAT band, this comes from the fall 2023 class of enrolled students who chose to send that test.

The ACT range is narrow. That means each point matters a great deal at this level. A student moving up by a single point on the ACT can shift from the low end of the band to its middle.

We tell families not to assume one test is easier. The right choice is the test where your own child scores higher on a full-length practice run.

How many Yale first-years sent a score?

In the fall 2023 class, 56 percent of enrolled first-years sent an SAT and 26 percent sent an ACT. The SAT was the more common choice.

For the 2026-2027 cycle, every applicant sends an SAT or ACT score. So the share who send a score is no longer a question for your family. The question is which test, and how strong.

Should my child send a score to Yale?

Yes, every Yale applicant sends an SAT or ACT score, so the only question is how strong it is. There is no choice to leave it off.

Our rule is simple. A score inside or above the 1500 to 1580 SAT band, or the 33 to 35 ACT band, is a score to send with confidence. A score below the band is one to think hard about. Since your child must send a score anyway, the real question is whether another sitting could raise it.

We tell families to plan for the strongest score they can reach before the deadline, not the first score that comes back.

How hard is it to get into Yale?

Yale admitted 4.5 percent of applicants for fall 2023, with 2,331 admits out of 51,803 applicants. That is among the hardest odds in the country.

At odds like these, no single part of an application makes an admit likely. We tell families that a strong score is the part a student can most directly improve with focused prep. Grades are mostly set by senior year. A test score can still move.

What does it cost to apply to and attend Yale?

The application fee at Yale is $80, the full price of a year is $88,300, and the average net price after aid is $23,777. The average net price is what families paid on average after grants and aid.

Your own price may be very different from either figure. Yale publishes a net price calculator, as every US college must. We tell families to run it with their own income and savings before ruling Yale in or out.

When are Yale's deadlines for fall 2027?

Yale's Single-Choice Early Action deadline was November 1, 2026, and Regular Decision is due January 2, 2027. If your child missed the early round, Regular Decision is the path that remains.

Other early rounds are not listed for Yale. We tell families to finish testing well before January 2 so the final weeks are not a rush.

What should we do this month?

Sit a full-length mock SAT and a full-length mock ACT this month, then compare each result with Yale's bands of 1500 to 1580 and 33 to 35. That comparison shows which test fits your child and how far there is to go.

Test Prep Gurus offers a free mock SAT and a free mock ACT. Call us at 949.229.5359 or sign up at https://www.prepgurus.com/take-the-next-step.

Once you know the gap, plan 6 to 12 weeks of prep before a test date that counts. Prepare for the whole test every sitting, not just the section that felt weakest last time. Our students who treat every sitting as the real one tend to see the steadiest gains.
