Does Northeastern Require the SAT in 2026? Test-Optional, 1460-1550 Mid-Range

As of October 2026: No. Northeastern University is test-optional for the foreseeable future, including fall 2027, so no SAT or ACT score is required. Among enrolled first-years who did send scores, the middle range was 1460 to 1550 on the SAT and 33 to 35 on the ACT, and only 27 percent sent an SAT while 8 percent sent an ACT.

Northeastern is test-optional, but the students who send scores send very high ones. Here is what the numbers say about whether your child should send one.

No score is required, and the policy has no end date Northeastern's own admissions page says the school is test-optional for the foreseeable future, and that wording includes fall 2027. The school states plainly that it does not require applicants to submit standardized testing to be considered for admission. So a strong file with no SAT and no ACT is a real application, not a damaged one. That is the first thing we tell families, because it takes the panic out of the fall of senior year.

Most admitted students did not send a score at all Only 27 percent of enrolled first-years submitted an SAT and only 8 percent submitted an ACT. That means the clear majority of the class got in on grades, courses, essays, and activities. The flip side matters too: the small group that did send scores sent very high ones, with an SAT middle range of 1460 to 1550.

The odds are tight, and early decision changes them the most Northeastern drew 96,631 applicants and admitted 5,411, an admit rate of 5.6 percent. In the fall 2024 entering class, 3,466 students applied early decision and 1,492 were admitted, a rate of 43.05 percent against an overall rate of 5.22 percent. The binding plan is the single largest lever a family controls.

Does Northeastern University require the SAT or ACT in 2026?

No. Northeastern University is test-optional, and its own admissions page says the policy holds for the foreseeable future, including fall 2027.

The exact line the school posts is short and clear. Northeastern says it does not require applicants to submit standardized testing to be considered for admission. There is no hidden rule under that sentence. There is no separate track for students with scores and students without.

The second table on this page lists the 2026 policy as test-optional as well, so the federal view and the school's own view agree. When two sources agree, we stop looking for a catch.

One field is blank. The pack does not report the year Northeastern changed its policy, so we cannot tell you when the switch happened. That gap does not change the answer for your child this year.

What this means for a family is simple. Your child can finish a complete, strong Northeastern application with no SAT score and no ACT score in the file. The grades, the course list, the essays, and the activities carry the weight. A score is one more piece your child may add if it helps, and we will spend most of this page on how to tell whether it helps.

What SAT score do you need for Northeastern University?

There is no required score, but the middle range for enrolled first-years who submitted an SAT was 1460 to 1550.

Read those two numbers the right way. The 1460 is the 25th percentile, which means a quarter of score-senders who enrolled came in at or below it. The 1550 is the 75th percentile, so a quarter came in at or above it. Half the score-senders sat between the two.

This band does not describe the whole class. It describes only the 27 percent who sent an SAT. Students who applied with no score are not in these numbers at all, and they are the bigger group.

So the honest answer to 'what score do you need' is that you need no score. If your child chooses to send one, a 1550 sits at the top of the range and a 1460 sits at the bottom. Below 1460, the score is pulling against the rest of the file more often than it helps.

We use that band as a target, not a wall. A junior who tests well below 1460 in October still has room to move. Six to twelve weeks of steady work on the whole test, not one section, is the plan we run with most families who want to reach the band.

What ACT score do you need for Northeastern University?

The middle range for enrolled first-years who submitted an ACT was 33 to 35.

That is a narrow band near the top of the scale. A 33 sits at the 25th percentile and a 35 sits at the 75th. There is very little room between them, which tells you the ACT senders at Northeastern are a small and sharp group.

Only 8 percent of enrolled first-years sent an ACT, against 27 percent who sent an SAT. The ACT is the less common choice at this school by a wide margin. That is not a hint that one test is preferred. Both tests are read the same way.

For a family, the practical point is the step size. On the ACT, one point is a big move near the top. A single point below 33 can change whether a score helps at all. On the SAT, the same distance spreads over many questions, so progress shows up in smaller steps.

We tell families to pick one test and commit. A free mock SAT and a free mock ACT, scored side by side, usually show a clear edge within a few weeks. Then the whole prep plan points at that one test.

How many Northeastern students actually submit test scores?

Just 27 percent of enrolled first-years submitted an SAT and 8 percent submitted an ACT.

Add those two shares and you still have a minority of the class. Some students send both tests, so the shares do not stack cleanly, but the picture holds. Most students in the Northeastern first-year class did not lean on a test score to get in.

This is the single most useful fact on the page for a worried parent. The school is not quietly requiring a score while saying it is optional. If it were, the submit shares would be near 100 percent, not 27 percent and 8 percent.

There is a trade-off hidden in the low share. Because so few students send scores, the ones who do send high ones. The 1460 to 1550 band and the 33 to 35 band are what the self-selected group looks like. A score in the middle of the national range will not read as strong here.

So the choice is binary and it is yours. Send a score that sits in or above the band, or send none. There is no benefit in sending a number that undercuts the rest of the file.

Should my child send a score to Northeastern if it is optional?

Send the score if it lands at or above 1460 on the SAT or 33 on the ACT; otherwise do not send it.

Those two numbers are the 25th percentile marks from the table. A score above them puts your child inside the band that current students built. A score below them gives the reader a reason to pause, and with a 5.6 percent admit rate, no one needs another reason to pause.

The exception is close calls. A score a few points under 1460 is not really different from 1460. If your child is one sitting away from the band, we test again rather than guess. Most students who prep for six to twelve weeks move enough to settle the question.

A second exception shows up with scholarship and honors review at some schools. Northeastern does not state a score rule for that in the pack we used, so we treat the admission rule as the only rule here.

What this means at home is that the decision is data, not nerves. Take a full, timed mock test. Compare the result to 1460 and to 33. The number tells you what to do, and you stop arguing about it.

How hard is it to get into Northeastern University?

Northeastern received 96,631 applications and admitted 5,411 students, an admit rate of 5.6 percent.

That rate is about one seat offered for every twenty files read. At that level, no single part of the application is a key. Strong grades in hard classes are the floor, not the edge.

The volume matters as much as the rate. With 96,631 applicants, readers move fast. A file that makes its case in the first page gets a fairer read than one that buries the point. Clear, specific essays do more here than long ones.

The federal file and the Common Data Set count slightly different years, so the numbers differ a little. The Common Data Set shows 98,425 total applicants and 5,133 admits for fall 2024 entrants, an overall rate of 5.22 percent. Both tell the same story.

For a family, the honest framing is that Northeastern is a reach for nearly everyone, including students with a 1550. We build lists where Northeastern sits beside schools that admit a much larger share. That is how a strong student ends up with real choices in April.

Does applying early decision to Northeastern help?

Yes. The early decision admit rate was 43.05 percent, against an overall rate of 5.22 percent in the same cycle.

The counts behind those rates come from Northeastern's Common Data Set for fall 2024 entrants. The school received 3,466 early decision applications and admitted 1,492 of them. Over the whole pool, 98,425 students applied and 5,133 were admitted.

The gap is large, and we do not want to oversell it. Early decision pools hold recruited athletes, legacy applicants, and students who have been building a Northeastern case for years. Part of the higher rate reflects who applies, not only when they apply.

Early decision is also binding. If your child is admitted, your family commits to attending and withdraws other applications. That is a financial promise too, so run the net price calculator before you sign anything.

The practical takeaway is about timing. Early decision deadlines fall in the autumn of senior year, so testing must be finished by then if your child plans to send a score. That pushes the last sitting back to the spring or summer of junior year for most families.

When should my child take the SAT or ACT for Northeastern?

Finish testing before the early decision deadline in the fall of senior year, which means the spring or summer of junior year for most students.

Northeastern's early decision pool admitted 1,492 of 3,466 applicants in the fall 2024 cycle. Families who want that higher rate cannot be scrambling for an October score. The file should be ready before the fall rush begins.

We plan backward from that date. A full prep cycle runs six to twelve weeks of steady work. Put a test date at the end of junior year, then keep one more date open in the early fall as a safety net.

The mistake we see most often is section hopping. A student drills math for a month, then reading for a month, and the score sits still. We prepare for the whole test every sitting, because the score is a single number and the test is a single event.

If your child decides after a mock test not to send scores at all, that is a clean decision and it frees real hours. Those hours go into essays, which every applicant must write no matter what.

What does Northeastern University cost, and what does a family actually pay?

The full published price is 84,641 dollars a year, and the average net price after aid is 30,915 dollars a year.

That gap is the whole point of running the numbers. The sticker figure scares families off before they check what their own household would pay. Aid shrinks the price for a large share of students, and the average lands well under half of full price.

Your number will not be the average. Net price depends on income, assets, family size, and how many children are in college at once. Northeastern posts a net price calculator, and the link sits in the table above. Fifteen minutes there gives you a better figure than any average can.

The application fee is 75 dollars. Fee waivers exist for families who qualify, and the application itself names that option.

For a family, the move is to find your net price before your child falls in love with the campus. If the number works, apply with confidence. If it does not, you have time to add schools where the aid math lands better. Doing this in junior year is far easier than doing it in April of senior year.

Do Northeastern graduates earn enough to justify the price?

Median earnings ten years after entry are 92,538 dollars a year, against a four-year cost of 123,660 dollars at the average net price.

The pack runs that comparison out ten years. Ten years of pay at the median comes to 925,380 dollars. Subtract the 123,660 dollars of cost and the net gain is 801,720 dollars. That is a rough frame, not a promise, and it ignores what your child would have earned without the degree.

Two other numbers belong in the same conversation. The four-year graduation rate is 90.5 percent, which is high. Students who start here mostly finish here, and finishing on time is the biggest cost control there is.

Median debt for completers is 24,250 dollars. That is a real loan balance, but it sits below the first-year median earnings figure by a wide margin. Debt that stays under one year of pay is the line we watch with families.

What this means at home is that Northeastern's price is high and its outcomes are strong. The question is not whether the school pays off on average. It is whether your family's net price and your child's plan line up.

What should we do this month?

Take a full, timed mock SAT and a full, timed mock ACT, then compare the results to 1460 and to 33.

That one step settles most of the argument. If one test comes out clearly ahead, that is the test. If both land far below the bands, your child can stop testing and put the time into grades and essays. Either outcome is useful.

If the mock lands close to the band, start a prep cycle of six to twelve weeks and sit for a real test in the spring or summer of junior year. Prepare for the whole test every sitting. Partial prep produces partial gains.

At the same time, run the net price calculator linked in the table. Knowing whether your family pays near 30,915 dollars or near 84,641 dollars changes the whole list, and it changes whether early decision makes sense.
