How much merit money does a higher SAT or ACT score add?

As of October 2026. Every number below is sourced; the list is at the end.

As of October 2026, the answer is thousands of dollars a year. The jump is not gradual. Take the University of Alabama. An out-of-state student with a 3.5 GPA and a 29 ACT (SAT 1330 to 1350) is listed at $15,000 a year. One point higher, a 30 ACT (SAT 1360 to 1410), is listed at $24,000. Same kid, same transcript, $9,000 more a year.

The belief: the SAT or ACT is only an admissions hurdle

Most parents think of the SAT or ACT as a gate. You clear it, your kid gets in, and the score stops mattering. Then the aid letter comes. The score is sitting right there in the math.

Roughly half of all scholarships are tied to a GPA and an ACT or SAT score. Many of our students win merit awards of $10,000 to $30,000 a year. That money is not a prize for being interesting. It is a line on a published grid.

The grids are a staircase, not a ramp

Alabama's out-of-state grid for a 3.5 GPA, as published on October 7, 2026.

ACTSATAward per year
281300-1320$10,000
291330-1350$15,000
30-311360-1410$24,000
32-361420-1600$28,000

There is nothing between the steps. The award renews while the student keeps a cumulative 3.0 GPA at Alabama.

Other colleges are built the same way. Auburn's Fall 2026 chart for non-residents with a 3.5 GPA pays $7,000 at a 29 or 30 ACT. Then $11,000 at a 31 or 32, $15,000 at a 33 or 34, and $17,000 at a 35 or 36. Those renew on a cumulative 3.0 Auburn GPA. Ole Miss pays Mississippi residents $7,500 at a 32 (SAT 1420 to 1440) and $10,278 at a 33. One point apart.

Find the step above your kid's score. That gap is what six to twelve weeks of work could add. More grids are on Reach's merit scholarship page.

Not every college works this way. The University of Miami looks at every applicant for merit money, but prints no score-to-dollar chart. No step to aim at.

Three recent students of ours

A student with a 31 ACT was offered $112,000 at TCU. Merit money, not need-based aid.

A 30 ACT drew $144,000 at Chapman. A 1330 SAT drew $91,000 at SMU. All three are four-year awards, as the families reported them to us.

None of it was bought. Each one sat the whole exam, put in the weeks, and moved up a step.

National Merit runs on the PSAT

One of the biggest awards starts somewhere else. National Merit begins with the PSAT/NMSQT in 11th grade. The Selection Index cutoff moves by state, and NMSC does not publish it in advance. California's was 221 for the class of 2025. The National Merit award itself is $2,500. Finalists can win much bigger sponsor packages.

Students sign up for the PSAT themselves. The school hosts it. Prepare months out, not two weeks out.

What these grids do not promise

Every grid has a date on it, and colleges rewrite them. A high score is earned by work, never bought. A grid tells you what a tier pays, not that an offer will come. Read the college's own page for the year your kid applies. Auburn says so on its own chart: it "is a guide and is not a guarantee of future awards."

The move

Pull up your kid's last score. Find the next step on two or three target colleges' grids. Write the dollar gap on paper. Then give the SAT or ACT six to twelve weeks of real work, on the whole exam, never one section. Start with a free mock SAT and ACT. Questions parents ask

Does one more ACT point really change the award that much?

On a published grid it can. The University of Alabama lists $15,000 a year for an out-of-state student at a 29 ACT and $24,000 at a 30, with a 3.5 GPA, as published on October 7, 2026.

Do these scholarships renew for all four years?

The grid awards at Alabama and Auburn renew while the student keeps a cumulative 3.0 GPA at that college. Read the college's own page, because every grid is dated and the conditions differ.

Does my child need the SAT or ACT for National Merit?

National Merit starts with the PSAT/NMSQT in 11th grade, not the SAT or ACT. California's Selection Index cutoff was 221 for the class of 2025, and students sign up for the PSAT themselves.

Do merit awards that large really happen?

They do. Three recent students of ours were offered $112,000 at TCU with a 31 ACT, $144,000 at Chapman with a 30 ACT, and $91,000 at SMU with a 1330 SAT. Those are four-year awards, as the families reported them to us.
